Diabetic Baker

I'm a type I diabetic who loves to bake, so here's to moderation and still doing what you love! I hope you enjoy this hodgepodge of diabetes-related tid-bits from my life.

My Bad

So I’ve been having lows in the mornings and decided that I should probably adjust my basal rates. Silly me thought I could make the one change and leave the others all the same. So, I made the time switch then realized it had erased every one of my rates for the rest of the day. Oops…BUT OF COURSE IT DID!! I’ve had this pump for about 9 years and I’m fairly certain that it’s always done that. As such, I typically have my original rates written down so that I can refer to them when they erase from the pump. However, seeing as I am on vacation, all my rates are written down AT HOME where they are rendered useless. Like I said, my bad. Just a learning experience I suppose-

#1- Always write down your basal rates before trying to adjust them

#2- Always make sure you have your endo’s number while on vacation..it makes solving this problem MUCH easier!

Come on Steve. Seriously?! If you tell me ‘No Delivery’ one more time, I think I might flip out. It’s not even the annoyance of the needle stick…I only packed so many sets for this trip!

Please just work!!!

Steve is quite resilient.

I slam him in a car door yet there is not a scratch on him. He’s certainly more durable than my real pancreas. You go Steve!

So I went to the gym with my sugars a little bit high. I mean they weren’t crazy high, but it was enough to make me feel uncomfortable during my workout. Now that I’m back from the gym my sugars are dropping rather quickly- also not the most pleasant feeling. REALLY?!

Most of the time, I really am ok with my diabetes. It’s finally become more of my normal routine- we’ve made peace, diabetes and I. BUT, whenever I try to change anything about my normal routine (ie. my exercise routine), my diabetes goes bonkers. I JUST WANT TO FEEL NORMAL!! I don’t mean socially normal, that’s overrated. I just want to feel physically normal/ balanced. Please?

  • Me: Oh, looks like I'm out of insulin after this bolus. I better refill the reservoir once it's done running in.
  • Me (*2 hours later*): Wait, did I ever...? Ughhhhhh.....
